Constipation and soiling (Level one) – training for all professionals that work with children

Chronic constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders experienced by children, with a pooled prevalence of over 9%. However, it is not always well recognised and is often associated with soiling. Families often delay seeking help due to a lack of understanding of the symptoms, embarrassment and concern about negative reactions from healthcare professionals.

Bladder & Bowel UK are delighted to be partnering with Qufora to deliver two lunchtime learning sessions for healthcare professionals who work with children and teenagers. The level one session will provide a basis for understanding the causes, impact and first line treatments. The level two session aims to extend knowledge and will include care for children with intractable constipation.

This Lunchtime Learning session will cover the prevalence, causes and impact of constipation, along with approaches to its management. It will include the role of medication, diet, fluid intake and behavioural interventions as well as provide information about resources that are available to support families and healthcare professionals.

The session will be based on evidence and current NICE Guidance. It is relevant for all healthcare professionals who work with children and families in any setting, including those whose children have additional needs.

Objectives

Following this Bladder & Bowel UK lunchtime learning, delivered in partnership with Qufora, delegates should:

• Know the prevalence, impact and causes of constipation and soiling
• Understand the wider factors that may impact
• Be aware of the first line treatments and interventions
• Have the confidence to work with children and families where constipation and soiling is an issue
• Be able to find further resources, information and support

Any healthcare professional involved in the care of children in the community, including but not limited to school nurses, health visitors, community nurses, learning disability nurses, allied healthcare professionals, community paediatricians, GPs, practice nurses, nursery nurses and support workers, etc. 

All training is delivered via Zoom.
